Young Lawyers
The Young Lawyers Section of the Shreveport Bar Association is open to attorneys age 36 and under who have been practicing law for five years or less.
ANNUAL PROJECTS:
Teen Court - Teen Court is a diversion program for first time juvenile offenders sponsored by Volunteers for Youth Justice. Members of the Young Lawyer's Section volunteer bimonthly to act as judges and attorney coaches to assist students participating in Teen Court.
Mock Trial Competition - The Young Lawyer's Section coordinates the regional high school mock trial competition. The competition is held each year at the First Judicial District Court. All high schools in the Northwest Louisiana region are invited to participate. The winners advance to the state competition and then a national competition. Local judges and attorney members of the Bar volunteer each year to act as performance judges who score and critique the teams' performances.
Krewe of Justinian - The Young Lawyer's Section has recently become a more active participant in Krewe of Justinian events which has increased young lawyer participation in the Krewe. The Section plans to purchase a slip at the Duck Pond next year for all attorneys and their families to gather during the parade.
People's Law School - People's Law School is an annual seminar sponsored by the Young Lawyer's Section which provides free legal advice to the public. Local attorneys volunteer time to speak on a particular topic and then answer any questions posed by the audience. This event is held in conjunction each year with other Law Week events.
Providence House - Each year the Young Lawyer's Section sponsors an event for Providence House. This year we planned a St. Patrick's Day Party and are in the process of planning a Back to School Party for the children. We are currently soliciting donations from area businesses for school uniforms that we will present to the children at the party.
Seminar for New Attorneys - The Young Lawyer's coordinate an annual seminar for newly admitted attorneys, which includes presentations by local Judges, attorneys, and other court personnel to provide practical advice on practicing law. The seminar is followed by a luncheon, formal introduction to the Court, and a party that evening.
Mentor Program - The Young Lawyer's Section is in the process of establishing a Mentor Program which would pair newly admitted attorneys with attorneys who have been practicing longer than five years.
Social Events - The Young Lawyer's Section sponsors several social events each year open to all area attorneys. Notice of these events are posted in the Shreveport Bar Association's publication, The Bar Review.
